Small scale experiments: Electrodeposition of copper

Meet Dimitra Spanoudaki, an electrochemist working at NTUA for the Technologies for sustainable metallurgy group!

She is leading the electrochemistry research in HARARE, currently conducting experiments on the anodic dissolution of a Cu-Fe alloy produced in and the electrodeposition of Cu on the cathode in an electrolytic cell.

In this post you can see her performing a small-scale experiment in which she is varying the potential difference or the current density of the electrolytic cell to achieve maximum current efficiency and optimal electrodeposition of the Cu.

At the end of the experiment, Cu from the Cu-Fe alloy (circular shape) is deposited in the stainless-steel electrode (rectangular shape). You can identify it by its characteristic bronze color.
